Shopping for silicone tubing can be a bit tricky if you are not sure what you need. Another thing that some people might find confusing are the names of particular tubes and hoses that don’t really make sense once you look at the tubing itself. For instance, you find an 18″ silicone tube, but the cross-section is not 18 inches, nor is the inner diameter or length – so, what is it? How do you find the right tube? What do you do? Well, those markings do mean something, only not what you might think. Luckily, there is always a silicone tubing size chart that you can rely on to guide you through shopping.
A silicone tubing size chart is a chart with all the necessary information on a silicone tube you might need. So, let us give you a few examples. Let’s take a look at a standard, basic flow rate tubing – a 13″ for instance. That is a relatively small tube, with an inner diameter of 1/32 of an inch, or 0.8 mm. That is really small. In fact, this tube’s walls are thicker than the inner diameter. To be precise, they’re twice as thick, standing at 1.6mm or 1/16 of an inch. Other than size, there is other information you can find in a silicone tubing size chart, for instance, maximum pressure the tube can withstand, because after all, you will run some liquid or gas through it.
Now, these markings can be a bit confusing because if you take a look at the 25″ tube, that one is not twice as large as the 13″. In fact, the inner diameter is almost five times as large. However, if you take a look at the 24″ tube, the diameter is even bigger than the one with the 25″ tube. So, we guess you’re going to have to rely on the silicone tubing size chart at all times.
