Airtight sealing for medical and laboratory containers
Good airtightness is the key benefit of these butyl rubber stoppers. The low gas permeability of bromobutyl rubber helps limit gas exchange, while a correctly matched stopper and bottle neck provide a secure seal. Applications include medical containers, laboratory sample bottles and anaerobic culture vessels. Select the compound and closure to suit the contents, handling and storage conditions.
01 / MEASURE
Start with the bottle-neck drawing
Use these definitions with this page’s drawing and model table. Dimensions are in mm; letters may describe different features in other series.
- AStem diameter
- The plug body entering the bottle neck. Compare with the neck bore at the intended contact depth.
- BHead diameter
- The flange across the bottle rim. Check the rim and any cap or retainer dimensions.
- CStem length
- From the underside of the head to the tip. Check the neck depth and any change in the internal neck profile.
- DHead thickness
- The thickness above the rim. Include it when reviewing clearance and compression with any closure hardware.
- EUnderside recess diameter
- The reference drawing shows an underside recess; the table includes both zero and nonzero E values. Obtain the selected stopper section, including recess depth and remaining head thickness.
- Identify the vessel. Provide its manufacturer, neck drawing or a sample. Record neck bore, bore tolerance, rim OD, rim shape and usable insertion depth.
- Include closure hardware. If a cap or retainer is used, provide its drawing and intended assembly method. Confirm whether it is supplied separately.
- Describe the full service cycle. State medium, temperature, duration, pressure or vacuum and any cleaning or sterilization cycle that must be evaluated.

Medical, laboratory and anaerobic sealing applications
Medical container sealing
For medical bottles and containers where airtight closure is a priority. Match the stopper to the container and contents, and evaluate the selected compound and sterilization compatibility for the intended medical use.
Laboratory sample and reagent bottles
Seal sample bottles, reagent containers and laboratory vessels to help limit air ingress and gas exchange during handling and storage. Select the compound for the sample or reagent and specify the required storage duration and sealing performance.
Anaerobic culture bottles and tubes
Low gas permeability helps limit oxygen ingress into anaerobic culture bottles, tubes and flasks. Verify airtightness with the complete bottle-and-stopper assembly under the intended culture conditions.
Sampling and repeated access
For workflows that involve needle access, specify the needle type, puncture count and required resealing performance. Evaluate samples after access to confirm that the closure continues to meet your airtightness requirements.

Achieve a secure, airtight bottle closure
Trial assembly checks
- Inspect the mating parts. Check the bottle rim and stopper for damage or contamination. Use the preparation method agreed for the application and selected compound.
- Confirm seating. Align the stopper with the neck and use the specified assembly method. Check uniform head seating and clearance to the internal neck profile.
- Apply the specified closure. Where hardware is required, use the matched cap or retainer and its approved settings. Head diameter alone does not determine closure compression.
- Test the complete cycle. Check retention, leakage or gas ingress before and after the intended treatment or storage. If piercing is specified, include the required access cycles in validation.
