MEASURE · SELECT · INSTALL

Fit the cap around the outside

RSE is an external cap with one open end and one closed end. Start with the outside of the tube, rod or fitting that needs covering.

01 / MEASURE

Measure the component OD and cover length

Use these definitions with this page’s drawing and model table. Dimensions are in mm; letters may describe different features in other series.

AInternal diameter
The cap opening. Compare it with the finished component outside diameter (OD), including any coating.
BExternal diameter
The overall cap width. Check clearance to adjacent parts after fitting.
CInternal depth
From the open edge to the inside of the closed end. Check the length to be covered and any end clearance.
DOverall height
From the open edge to the outside of the closed end. This includes the end wall; it is not the available internal depth.
  1. Measure the outside. Use the outside jaws of a caliper on the finished part. Record diameter in two directions and note threads, grooves, burrs or a tapered end.
  2. Mark the coverage required. Measure from the component end to the intended cap edge. Note shoulders that could prevent the cap from sliding far enough.
  3. Confirm the fit allowance. Send OD and tolerance with the selected A and C. Do not treat the cap ID as a guaranteed mating OD; confirm material, hardness and sample retention.

02 / SELECT

Choose for external protection or masking

Tube and rod ends

Specify which outer surfaces need protection during handling or storage. Check that the cap stays on during your handling process.

Process masking

Identify the surface to keep uncoated, bath or coating chemistry, process temperature and exposure time. Verify the selected compound with the actual process.

03 / INSTALL

Slide on evenly; do not stretch over an obstruction

External cap section over a tube: open end, cap internal depth and closed end clearance
The cap grips the outside of the component. The tube end sits inside the closed cap; confirm the required end clearance. Blue = rubber part; gray = mating component. Schematic, not to scale.

Trial assembly checks

  1. Prepare the end. Remove loose debris and check sharp edges before fitting; a burr or thread crest can damage the cap wall.
  2. Check coverage. Align the cap with the component and slide it on evenly. The open edge should reach the agreed coverage position without rolling or splitting.
  3. Check retention and removal. Trial the real surface finish and coating. Confirm the cap stays in place and can be removed without unacceptable marking.
  4. Check the required function. If the cap must contain liquid or gas, validate the complete assembly for that duty. Protective coverage alone is not a pressure rating.

Send for a fit review: Component OD and tolerance, required cover length, shoulder location, surface finish, handling or masking conditions, quantity and selected RSE part number. Add these details to your inquiry.
