MEASURE · SELECT · INSTALL

Select a taper by its seating depth

RSA narrows from a large end to a small end. The contact diameter changes with insertion depth, so both end diameters and the height matter.

01 / MEASURE

Compare both diameters with the bore

Use these definitions with this page’s drawing and model table. Dimensions are in mm; letters may describe different features in other series.

ALarge-end diameter
The drawing labels this Diameter A. It is the widest end, not a universal hole-size recommendation.
BSmall-end diameter
The drawing labels this Diameter B. This is the leading end that enters the opening first.
HHeight
H here refers to the table column Height: the full axial length from large end to small end. It is not the installed insertion depth.
  1. Measure beyond the rim. Record the hole diameter below any chamfer, in two directions and at the intended contact depth. State whether the bore is straight or tapered.
  2. Record depth and access. Measure the distance to the bottom or the nearest obstruction. Leave an agreed portion exposed so the stopper can be removed.
  3. Use the taper as an initial screen. For an undeformed taper entering a straight bore, the small end must enter and the larger section must reach the bore. This geometry does not establish compression, retention or sealing; confirm the actual seated depth with a sample.

02 / SELECT

Match the taper to the job

Temporary closing

Consider the taper when seating depth can be adjusted during fitting. Specify how often the stopper will be removed and how much of its large end must remain accessible.

Masking an opening

Specify the exact surface to mask and whether an exposed rim is acceptable. Confirm compound compatibility with the bath, coating and heat cycle.

03 / INSTALL

Insert the small end and check the contact position

Tapered stopper entering a straight bore: large end remains exposed and the taper meets the rim at the seating position
Conceptual contact position before deformation. Actual seating and contact length depend on the bore, taper and compound; the large end remains accessible. Blue = rubber part; gray = mating component. Schematic, not to scale.

Trial assembly checks

  1. Start straight. Inspect and clean the rim, then align the small end with the hole. Apply controlled, even pressure; stop if it tilts or jams.
  2. Check the depth. Record the seated position. Confirm that the tip has not bottomed out before the intended contact is reached.
  3. Check removal. Keep the agreed amount of the large end exposed and trial removal after the intended process or storage period.
  4. Verify performance. Check retention and, if required, leakage under your actual conditions. Do not assign one sealing performance to the whole taper range.

Send for a fit review: Hole diameter and bore profile, available depth, desired seated position, masking or closing purpose, process conditions and selected RSA part number. Add these details to your inquiry.
